Jesus lived on this earth for 33 years. During that time, He did many things and left many examples and a pattern of how we should live our lives. The lessons He taught His disciples are valuable lessons today. We should always look to these lessons for guidance in our struggles and triumphs, and our relationships at home, workplace and school.
This article focuses on the determination of Jesus. When we read Luke 2:48-50:
When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
It appears Jesus was being a wise guy or disrespecting His parents with the sharp answer He gave Mary. Jesus wasn’t being rebellious or sassy. He was simply telling them that where He was at was where He was supposed to be. Jesus and His family were in Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. They went with other people and when they left Jerusalem, they thought Jesus was with them. Jesus was only 12 years old so you can imagine how frantic Mary was when she discovered Jesus wasn’t with them on their journey back home. Three days later they found Jesus in the temple among teachers listening and asking questions.
No matter when, 12 year olds are going to be 12 year olds. Remember yourself? Full of fun seeking, adventure and mischief. Right? There’s nothing new under the sun.
Jesus could’ve been somewhere else 12 year olds go in that day, but He was in the temple being prepared for His entire world changing ministry. Jesus told Mary He had to be in His Father’s house. The King James Version states Jesus said; “wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” Either way, it is written Jesus was determined to get on with what He was born to do.
How determined are you to do the will of our Father in heaven? Compare yourself with how determined Jesus was while He ministered to people.
Lord. I pray for determination to fill every Christian’s heart and lifestyle. It is so easy to be determined in carrying out worldly things because the world loves it’s own. We understand the opposition that will come from us being determined to do your will, so strengthen us with the power your provide through your Holy Spirit. – Amen.
