Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. – Matthew 5:5
Jesus’ teachings are the complete opposite of the ways of this world. This verse would be one of many examples of the statement I just made. To get an understanding, let’s look at the definition of meek.
“Quiet, gentle and submissive.”
This is the complete opposite of what many of us were taught, especially when it comes to being successful in our careers and businesses. We taught to be aggressive and many took that beyond by actually hurting people and destroying lives just to make it to the top.
Jesus wanted the listeners on the mount and us today, that being meek is the way to true happiness and peace. It is written in Psalm 37:11, David the king said, not only will the meek inherit the land, the meek will always enjoy peace and prosperity. How many people are prosperous but they lack peace in their lives?
Am I saying we shouldn’t desire to be prosperous and successful in our endeavors? Nope! I’m saying that it is a benefit to walk in meekness with an attitude of humility toward God and gentleness toward all people. Being meek is nothing like being weak. Weakness comes from a lack of something or negative circumstances.
Meekness is controlled strength and courage tempered with kindness. Jesus is our perfect pattern for being meek and humble. He proclaimed in Matthew 11:29 that He is meek and lowly in heart. There are many verses concerning the haughty, proud, and aggressive. And you’ll read their end often leads to destruction and suffering. There are just as many verses concerning humility, submissiveness, kindness and love. You’ll read their end is peaceful and blessed beyond measure.
This verse is full of promise as all of them are. But remember without humility God will resist us. James 4:6 reads: But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Lord I pray for a spirit of humility to always abide in me. I know that aggressiveness and pride is the norm in the world we live in. I pray that you will strengthen those who have made a choice to live the way you say live by following your word, living according to the Beatitudes.
