1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
I have led several youth/teen bible studies over the past few years and one of the most common comments I heard from young people was; “But Minister Jordan, times have changed. Things are different now than they were when you was our age.” They had a valid point. Things are different than they were 40 years ago (watch the age jokes).
What was my response?
When I was your age, there weren’t any cell phones, text messages, camera phones, internet, satellites or fiber optics. The one noticeable difference is the speed by which things are conveyed to the masses. If a fight broke out in school, if you weren’t there, you had to get verbal replay of what happened from somebody who was. Now you can go to your phone and see a fight that happened just 5 minutes ago. (By the way that’s one of the most degrading things that’s hot on Facebook right now.)
The only things that have changed is the time. But Satan, temptation and sin is still around. He has made it more appealing and easier to get to. There was fornication when I was young (I fell for it). There was drugs when I was young (I fell for it). There was stealing, drinking, fighting and lying (I fell for all those too). I’m sure there is no one reading this who will disagree these things are still around.
All thanks to the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, who has made a way for us to escape the temptations of yesterday that are still present today. We just have to make up our minds to please God and not befriend the devil. When temptation comes, God has already worked out a way to escape. We just have to submit to Him, resist the devil (James 4:7) and take the way Jesus is showing us.
Lord thank you for making it possible to escape the wages of sin. Thank you for showing us a way out of it. In Jesus’ name – Amen!
